What is an international driver permit?

An international driving permit (IDP), also known as an international driver's licence or overseas driving permit, is a document that grants a valid translation of your original driver’s licence, allowing motorists to drive in a foreign country without the need to sit any further tests. They are primarily in place to overcome language barriers when travelling, so should be used to supplement your existing drivers’ licence when travelling overseas.

Do you need an international driving permit?

Whether or not you require an IDP depends on the destination you’re travelling to, and the length of your stay. We recommend checking the specific driving regulations of the destination you’re visiting, as some countries may accept your existing driving licence from Australia. In some cases, car rental companies require an overseas permit even if the country doesn’t have the regulations in place. If your destination primarily speaks a different language, it can be beneficial to have an IDP regardless to avoid any discrepancies.

It's important to note that some countries also require an IDP if your stay is longer than a specific period, which is often 90 days.

 International driving permit countries

Below are some of the top 10 destinations that DO require an international driving permit if you’re visiting from Australia:

  • Japan
  • Greece
  • Italy
  • Spain
  • Austria
  • Thailand
  • India
  • Brazil

Note that this information may change, and therefore it’s best to check the specific requirements of your destination before travelling. Contact the embassy or check the local government’s website for the most accurate and up-to-date regulations.

How to get an international driving permit

The process of obtaining an IDP is straightforward:

  1. Check the driving regulations for the country you’re visiting.
  2. Do your research and make sure that you have all of the requirements for an international driving permit for that country (typically over 18 years old with a valid driver’s licence).
  3. Find and complete an IDP application form – these can be accessed via the Australian Automobile Association site.
  4. Prepare all your documents - these commonly include your travel dates, your valid driver’s licence and passport details.
  5. Pay the international driving permit fee to issue your IDP, and submit the application.

Remember that an overseas driving permit is only a translation of your existing driver’s licence, and not a replacement. Make sure to carry both with you when driving overseas.

Driving on your next holiday can be the best way to explore and reach those off-the-beaten-path spots. With your IDP in hand, you're all set for an epic adventure. Safe travels and happy driving!
